Protriptyline/Vivactil
Vivactil or Protriptyline is one of the drugs from the big family of tricyclic antidepressants and is actually considered as a fast acting tricyclic because it tends to work more rapidly amongst others of its similar class.
Basically, unlike MAO inhibitors that work mainly in the central nervous system, this medication, Vivactil, works on the chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced.
Uses of Vivactil
Generally, Vivactil is used to treat depression, including those of inactive or withdrawn patients. At times, it is also used to treat bipolar disorder or manic depression.
However, its effectiveness is not oftentimes seen immediately, instead, it may sometimes take you days and even weeks before you see some improvements or positive results.

- Decreased libido
- Anxiety

- Rapid or irregular heartbeat

Special Considerations and Warnings
If you have manic-depression and schizophrenia or apt to have agitation or anxiety symptoms, well then Vivactil is not for you as use of such drug can just make your condition worser.
Vivactil is also not for you if you use MAO inhibitors such as Nardil and Parnate because of some untoward effects. Similarly, if you are using painkillers and other antidepressants and drugs, there’s also a great possibility that Vivactil will also be prohibited to you to avoid complications.
Vivactil on Pregnancy Issues
Vivactil, like any kinds of antidepressants, is also not advisable for use of women who are pregnant, planning to get pregnant or nursing an infant.
Hence, if in case you are in any of the conditions aforementioned, but have to take Vivactil, always be open minded and consider all the possible benefits and effects to you and to the baby as well. Be sure that the benefits you will gain in the end will justify the potential risks at hand.
