Zoloft is one of the popular selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs at present. Like most SSRIs, it basically works on a significant chemical messenger called serotonin which is believed to regulate moods.

Generally, Zoloft functions by slowing the process of reabsorption to likely maintain enough serotonin on the brain.

Uses of Zoloft

Normally, Zoloft is used to treat major depression that involves persistent low mood that lasts for a long time, and eventually already interfering with your daily functioning.

Similarly, it can also be used to treat other disorders just like Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) that has something to do with menstruation, obsessive-compulsive disorder that includes some unwanted thoughts and repetitive behaviors, panic disorder that includes overwhelming anxiety with unusual fear, social anxiety disorder that involves severe extreme shyness in social situations, and post-traumatic stress disorder that involves intense psychological distress because of some traumatic or tragic events.

Possible Side Effects

Zoloft may or at times may not include some side effects, depending actually on the person under treatment. In normal situations, a person taking Zoloft may experience:

• Insomnia
• Nausea
• Abdominal pain
• Agitation
• Anxiety
• Constipation
• Diarrhea or loose stools
• Difficulty with ejaculation
• Decreased sex drive
• Dizziness
• Dry mouth
• Problems on vision
• Fatigue
• Headache
• Tingling or pins and needles
• Tremor
• Decreased appetite
• Increased sweating
• Indigestion
• Nervousness
• Sleepiness
• Sore throat

Special Considerations and Warnings

Normally, you cannot take Prozac until you cease using MAO inhibitors like Marplan, Nardil, and Parnate. Zoloft may also has some adverse reactions when used with pimozide, so be sure to consult your doctor if in the event your are using such.

Drinking alcoholic beverages while taking Zoloft is also not advisable. So be sure to be guided accordingly.

Zoloft on Pregnancy Issues

According to some studies, newborns that have been exposed to Zoloft do actually now have some respiratory problems, irregular breathing, bluish coloring of the skin, muscular problems, constant crying, and vomiting. And so as a result, officially, Zoloft is not yet advisable to be used by women who are pregnant and still planning to get pregnant.
