Marplan/Isocarboxazid
Marplan or Isocarboxazid, just like most MAO inhibitors, is a second line of treatment that is oftentimes prescribed to people with depression and other related disorders who have not been helped by other antidepressants or medications.
Generally, this drug works by increasing the concentration of some neurotransmitters epinephrine, norepinephrine, and serotonin to eventually alleviate or even prevent occurrence of depression symptoms.
Uses of Marplan
Usually, Marplan is used to treat symptoms of depression such as sleep changes, weight gain or weight loss, lost of interest on things you used to enjoy, physical pain, hopelessness or worthlessness and suicidal thoughts. At times, it is also used for other anxiety and panic disorder related problems.
Possible Side Effects
The side effects caused by Marplan can actually become less severe at times but oftentimes can become more severe.
Normally, less severe side effects includes:
- Dry mouth
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Tiredness
- Forgetfulness
- Decreased sexual ability
- Problems associated with urination
While more severe side effects includes:
- Chest pain
- Headaches
- Numbness
- Sweating
- Seizures
- Fever
- Fast or pounding heartbeat
- Chills
- Fainting
- Cold, clammy skin
- Twitching of body parts
- Arms or legs discomforts
- Dizziness
- Wide pupils
- Chest or throat discomforts
- Stiff or sore neck
- Upset stomach
- Vomiting
- Uncontrollable shaking of body parts
- Blurred vision
- Sensitivity to light
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes
Special Considerations and Warnings
Marplan is not advisable to be combined with some prescription or nonprescription medications like amphetamines, medications for high blood pressure, mental illness, anxiety, pain, or weight loss, medications for seizures, tranquilizers, medications containing alcohol, and other antidepressants. Should there ever be a need for you to take some other medication aside from Marplan, consult your doctor before making any move.
In terms of alcohol, avoid taking alcoholic beverages while taking Marplan as alcohol can just add to the drowsiness caused by the medication itself.
Marplan on Pregnancy Issues
There are actually some reported cases of babies having some skin and respiratory disorders because of being exposed to Marplan during the last trimester. And so for such reason, Marplan shouldn’t be applied on pregnant women or even those who are thinking of becoming pregnant.
Antidepressants like Marplan is also said to appear in breastmilk, that’s why it is also not advisable for nursing moms to take Marplan, unless there’s a justifiable reason and need as well.
